Selecting Final Year Project Title

Posted by live_raghabendra on December 18, 2014 at 5:20 AM

Selecting a project title is a very important job. Students may follow different methods to find a suitable title for them. The chance of getting approval of their chosen title may differ according to the institute and departments. However, there are many common matters that all students need to consider such as;

  • Their title and objective of the project should be according to their interest and strength.
  • Every member of a group should at least should have clear knowledge of what they are planning to do and how are they planning to do it. That is to say, members should be able to describe their project to any person or group.
  • A thorough research on every element used in the project should be done. This will help to make a prior decision to limit their objective to a limit that would fulfill their requirement within the specified time. A project with a vague objective will make the members difficult to divide the work and finish in time.
  • Cooperation and sharing knowledge among the students (member or non-member, all departments) is necessary regardless of any sense of competition. Seeking help from each other will improve the chance of creating a better and improved system.

As an Electrical Engineer from Nepal, I would like to share my experience on selecting projects for electrical students.

The talent and capability of students is not defined by the nation or institute. The students are constrained by the facilities and resources provided to them. Many innovative ideas may hit a student mind but as they cannot go for experiment to test and realize their ideas, they are not able to contribute so much. Students have to fight against the constraint of fund, technical advice, supervision and studying materials. Similarly, the education system and resources provided to students are not enough to observe their knowledge in action or in practice. Since the education is limited to the books and exam paper, only few among the thousands who pass every year have a clear concept of what they have learned.

So, how to find a solution among all these hurdles? Here, I would like to suggest a few things to utilize our strength and resources to make a project success.

  1. Research is the first and most essential job to find a title. In this era of technology and global education system, it is easy to find all the recent developments in the particular areas of interest. Try to find as many article and research paper on the particular field. The more you learn the better you will understand your subject.
  2. Go through all the related projects, observe, and analyze them. Try to find out the defects or the improvements that can be done in them.
  3. For electrical students, hardware projects are hard to do due to the lack of fund and materials provided to them. Sort out the complexity and requirements. Make your objective clear and to the point. Discuss with your seniors and teacher and get their idea on the complexity that may occur.
  4. A simulation project may seem easy to do, but it should be able to produce a new idea or a better solution to the problem. Unless the proposed system does not show an improvement, it would be turned down during defense.
  5. Form a discussion group and ask help from your friends. Work together or as per your working pattern.
  6. Generally, first part of final year is just given for student to finalize their project title and so they should rather focus on their research than selecting a title at rush.
  7. Try to observe your society and find the issues that can be solved or improved.
